MANILA – According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the “Oplan Baklas” or dismantling of unlawfully placed campaign materials, will continue solely in public places.
Only the dismantling operation on private premises has been suspended by the Supreme Court (SC) after it issued a temporary restraining order (TRO), Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said.
“During the discussion of the Commission en banc earlier, it was agreed, of course, that we will honor the TRO issued by the Supreme Court. We will continue with our Baklas Operations in public spaces as it is required by law,” he said in a press briefing.
He added that the poll body works closely with the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) as to their response on the case.
The High Court issued on Tuesday a TRO against the Comelec and its campaign to dismantle illegal election posters.
In response to the petition by several individuals, who are supporters of presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo, involving its operations inside private properties, the order was released.
The Comelec has been given a non-extendible term of 10 days to file their statement with the SC.
