PRRD on Sara’s VP candidacy: ‘I will vote for my daughter’

MANILA – President Rodrigo R. Duterte on Monday stated that he will vote for his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, in the upcoming May 9 elections.

“I am not supporting any candidate except, of course, my daughter. Ako, boboto talaga ako sa anak ko (Me, I am really going to vote for my daughter),” Duterte said in a speech in Mataasnakahoy, Batangas.

Although Duterte has consistently stated that only his daughter could carry on his legacy, this is the first time he has announced unequivocally that he will vote for Sara as vice president.

On March 31, during a campaign rally of ruling political party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), Duterte vouched for the competence of his daughter, describing her as “very good and hardworking.”

Sara would be a good fit for the vice presidency, according to Duterte, because of her qualities and leadership style.

“But Inday is really very strict. You can’t crowd around waiting for her, you will be called one by one instead. But she will talk to you. And that’s good, that’s actually good. She can serve people in an orderly manner,” he said.

Last year, Duterte voiced his disappointment with Sara’s decision to run for vice president under the Lakas – Christian Muslim Democrats – last year (Lakas-CMD).

He even denied a possible coalition among PDP-Laban, PDP-Laban allied party, Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan and Lakas (PDDS), and Lakas-CMD in November 2021 because he considers presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to be a “weak leader”.

Marcos, who is running under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas political party, is Sara’s running mate.

Duterte expressed his disapproval with Sara’s decision to run for vice president, claiming that Marcos possibly “decided for her”.

The PDP-Laban wing led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, formally endorsed Marcos’ presidential bid last month.

Malacañang also confirmed a “cordial and productive” meeting between Duterte and Marcos, during which the former tackled “the current government’s major achievements and delivered pieces of advice to Mr. Marcos.”

According to Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, the meeting was one of the factors that led to the PDP-Laban Cusi faction to support Marcos’ presidential candidacy.

Despite this, Duterte has stated that he will deviate from his political party’s endorsement by remaining “neutral”.
