MANILA — The water allocation of 50 cubic meters per second for Maynilad and Manila Water will take effect on Saturday as the 52 CMS granted by the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) will end tomorrow amid the continued drop in the water level of Angat Dam.
In a text message to The STAR, NWRB executive director Sevillo David Jr. said the 50 CMS water allocation for the two water concessionaires will be effective for the entire month of July.
David added that aside from the 50 CMS for the household water supply, the NWRB Board also approved 28.5 CMS for irrigation.
As of 6 a.m. yesterday, the water level of Angat Dam further dropped to 183.25 meters or 0.27 meters less compared to its previous level of 183.52 meters.
The current measure of Angat Dam is only 3.25 meters higher before it reaches its critical level of 180 meters.
Angat Dam supplies more than 90 percent of Metro Manila’s potable water needs and provides for the irrigation needs of 25,000 hectares of farmlands in Bulacan and Pampanga.
In a separate text message to The STAR, MWSS deputy administrator Jose Dorado Jr. said the cut in the water allocation will result in a rotating water interruption, particularly for customers being serviced by Maynilad.
“There are areas affected (by the rotating water interruption) for Maynilad. We will update (the public) before the end of this week if there is new development,” Dorado said.
Among those who suffered from the eight to 14 hours daily water cutoff before the 52 cms water allocation took effect on April 15 were Maynilad customers in Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario in Cavite.
Meanwhile, at least 43,000 Maynilad customers were affected by the 13-hour water interruption from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. in Las Piñas, Bacoor City and Imus City starting yesterday. The water interruption will last until Aug. 8.
Maynilad said the interruption will allow the firm to replace an initial three of 14 ultrafiltration membranes at its Putatan Water Treatment Plant 2.
