FDA warns against risks of using unsafe products, counterfeits

MANILA – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a strong warning to the public about purchasing and using nine unregistered products that have not been passed through the agency’s strict evaluation process.

As of Sept. 8, the FDA has identified eight food products declared unsafe for consumption.

The FDA has taken the initiative to caution the general public against the purchase or consumption of these unregistered products in the interest of safety.

Among the unregistered food products flagged by the FDA are “DEFU Cafe Espresso Cafe Americano in White Box,” “UNBRANDED Asian Fruit Jai Alai Asian Asusinas,” “BUENAVISTA’S Pure Patis Anchovy Sauce,” “QUEEN M Arrowroot Cookies,” “UNBRANDED Rock Sugar,” “DON’S Natural Calaman-C,” “COLES Deliciously Thick Chocolate Fudge Topping,” and “ISLAND’S DELI Kamote Cookies.”

The FDA’s Post-Marketing Surveillance (PMS) operations proved that these food items failed the agency’s strict registration process and lacked the required authorization in the form of a Certificate of Product Registration (CPR).

Consuming these unauthorized products could result in “health risks” as the FDA cannot guarantee their quality or safety.

In addition to the food products, the FDA has also cautioned against the purchase and use of “counterfeit” version of “Methyl Salicylate + Menthol + Camphor (Katinko®) 80 mcg/75 mcg/26 mcg per gram Ointment 10g.”

Consumers are advised to purchase drug items only from FDA-licensed facilities to guarantee safety and efficacy.

Furthermore, the FDA has issued an urgent alert to all establishments and outlets against the sale or distribution of these counterfeit products, emphasizing that such actions violate Republic Act No. 9711, known as the Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009, and Republic Act No. 8203, the Special Law on Counterfeit Drugs.

The FDA has stated that anyone found selling counterfeit drug items will face punishment. The agency’s action highlights its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring the integrity of products on the market. (MB)
