LTO wants TRO on plastic cards lifted

MANILA — The Land Transportation Office is hoping that a Quezon City court will lift the temporary restraining order (TRO) issued on the driver’s license plastic cards after the LTO was ordered to halt the awarding of contract to the winning bidder.

During budget deliberations of the House committee on appropriations on the proposed 2024 budget of the Department of Transportation, Bagong Henerasyon party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera asked the LTO and Department of Transportation (DOTr) about the status of the distribution of driver’s licenses.

“What will happen to the driver’s license of our fellow Filipinos considering the TRO? What are the LTO and DOTr doing in relation to this?” Herrera asked.

LTO chief Vigor Mendoza expressed hope that the TRO would be lifted.

“The 20-day period will expire on Wednesday, but if it is not lifted and the injunction will continue, then we will be constrained to extend the licenses of motorists,” Mendoza said.

Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 215 Presiding Judge Rafael Hipolito granted the petition for TRO of ALLCARD Inc. against the LTO, DOTr and private respondent Banner Plasticard Inc.

“We are coming up with alternative plans, including electronic licensing. We are confident that the TRO will not proceed. Otherwise we will go to Plan B,” Mendoza said.

He also said the delivery of license plates continues. (philstar)
