MANILA – President Marcos is hopeful that more Filipinos will be able to safely leave war-torn Gaza after 40 of them left through Egypt’s Rafah crossing.
Marcos made the remarks as he welcomed reports that 40 Filipinos had safely and successfully crossed the Rafah Crossing in Egypt from Israel after being trapped in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists.
The President said in a video message that the Filipinos who left Gaza are now heading to Cairo, where they can start their journey back to the Philippines.
President Marcos thanked the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Philippine embassies in Israel, Jordan, and Egypt for making the safe passage of the Filipinos from Gaza possible.
He also thanked the governments of Israel and Egypt for assisting the distressed Filipinos, as well as Qatar for its assistance in reopening the borders.
“Nagpapasalamat din tayo sa mga pamahalaan ng Israel at Egypt sa kanilang pagbibigay prayoridad sa ating mga kababayan upang makalabas ng kanilang teritoryo (We thank the governments of Israel and Egypt for prioritizing our fellowmen so they could exit their territories),” Marcos said.
“Kinikilala rin natin ang mediation effort ng Qatar na siyang naging dahilan upang magbukas muli ang mga borders ng naturang bansa (We also recognize Qatar’s mediation effort that led to the reopening of the borders of the said countries),” he added.
Marcos expects that more Filipinos will now be able to return to the Philippines safely.
“Umaasa ako na ang natitirang kababayan na nagnanais ding umuwi, makakatawid na nang maayos kasama ang kanilang mga asawa at mahal sa buhay (I expect that the remaining Filipinos in Gaza who wish to go home will be able to safely cross the borders, along with their spouses and loved ones),” he said.
The recent war in Gaza started after Hamas terrorists launched surprise land, air, and sea attacks in Israel on October 7.
