MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) and an official of the United Nations (UN) on Wednesday discussed measures on road safety after over 1,400 people were killed in road accidents this year.
UN Special Envoy for road safety Jean Todt tackled issues on road safety with PNP officials led by deputy chief for administration Lt. Gen. Rhodel Sermonia at Camp Crame in Quezon City.
Todt and Sermonia talked about strategies to promote public awareness and ways to reduce deaths and injuries caused by road crashes.
During the meeting, the two officials discussed the challenges faced by the PNP in enforcing road safety regulations.
Police data showed there were 49,291 road accidents across the country from January to April 11. Of the figure, 1,499 people have died.
Todt commended the PNP for its efforts in addressing road safety challenges and noted the need for continued collaboration among stakeholders to reduce vehicular accidents and casualties.
He also emphasized the importance of investing in road safety measures and strengthening regulations to ensure safer roads for people.
In response, Sermonia expressed the PNP’s commitment to working with the UN and other stakeholders for the improvement of road safety.
The meeting was part of the UN’s efforts to engage with stakeholders globally and to promote its Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 to reduce road deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2030.
