BI warns against travel scams

MANILA – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has cautioned the public to remain vigilant against travel scams when organizing their Holy Week vacations online.

Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco emphasized on Monday that scammers employ e-travel strategies, such as offering inexpensive luxurious accommodations and airline tickets, to entice unsuspecting individuals.

“If the deal is too good to be true, don’t,” Tansingco warned as he urged travelers to be cautious because of the proliferation of fake eTravel websites.

He urged the public to report any suspicious websites and online activities to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) via hotline 1326.

Tansingco underscored the significance of collective efforts in combating cybercrime and safeguarding the rights and welfare of travelers.

Furthermore, he voiced his endorsement for the “Online Bantay Lakbay” initiative of the CICC, which was introduced in collaboration with the Department of Transportation (DoTr) and Scam Watch Pilipinas.

“By raising awareness and promoting vigilance among travelers, we can effectively counter cybercrime and ensure a safer online environment,” Tansingco said.

As a part of its dedication to consumer protection and cybersecurity, the BI urged travelers to consistently verify the authenticity of websites and service providers before divulging any personal or financial details.

According to the CICC, the prevalent scam tactic is “fake accommodation,” where scammers advertise villas, apartments, and hotel rooms at remarkably low prices.

Moreover, scammers entice victims with online airline tickets featuring substantial discounts but vanish from contact after the payment has been remitted.

Additional scams encompass fake Wi-Fi services, enticing offers for free vacations, fraudulent travel agents, exorbitantly priced tours, and deceptive charity schemes.
