MANILA – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) will advise State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) on implementing measures to ensure greater access for students from underprivileged families in their student admissions process.
CHED recently announced a P15-million study, to be conducted individually by the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Samar State University, and University of Southern Mindanao. This study aims to assist SUCs in developing admission policies that promote fair representation of disadvantaged students in higher education.
Each university, serving as a study site, will collect data to identify appropriate student support services tailored to meet the needs of underprivileged students. This initiative aims to enable these students to stay in school and complete their studies, thus reducing the attrition rate in tertiary education, according to CHED chairman J. Prospero de Vera III.
According to the latest CHED data, approximately three out of every ten students leave school temporarily or permanently, primarily due to financial constraints, family issues, relocation, medical or mental health concerns, and academic challenges.
“When this study is finished, its findings will be presented to the different boards of SUCs so that they can act in revising their admission policies so that they become more inclusive,” De Vera said at a press conference yesterday.
The CHED chief acknowledged that admission policies of SUCs have been problematic for “quite some time,” as they tend to favor children from privileged households, particularly in prestigious institutions such as the University of the Philippines and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
