China congratulates Marcos, Duterte on their electoral victories

MANILA — Former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, were congratulated by China for leading in the presidential and vice presidential elections.

“China congratulates the Philippines on the smooth presidential election. Our congratulations also go to the leading candidates,” China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Wednesday.

Marcos has had close ties with China since his father established diplomatic relations with the nation in 1975.

Previous statements by the presumptive president indicate that he will pursue a continuation of President Rodrigo Duterte’s policies toward China, which critics view as excessively soft, including bilateral negotiations with the Asian giant on the West Philippine Sea.

Meanwhile, the United States, a longtime ally of the Philippines, expressed its eagerness to cooperate with the president-elect and vice president-elect.

“We look forward to working with the president-elect, once that person is officially named, to strengthen the enduring alliance between the United States and the Philippines,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said.

Fitch Solutions stated in a commentary that Marcos “will likely continue the country’s economic interests and maintain a delicate balancing act with the US and China.”

Meanwhile, Japan and Australia and regional bloc European Union congratulated the Philippines for having conducted peaceful elections.
