DICT plans to launch 15,000 free Wi-Fi sites

MANILA — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) intends to launch more than 15,000 free Wi-Fi sites in the first half of 2023.

DICT also reported that up to 4,757 lives sites were activated under Broadband ng Masa (BBM) and Free WiFi.

The 4,757 live sites are in 17 regions, 75 provinces and the National Capital Region under the government’s digitalization initiative.

This is in addition to the 606 cities and municipalities that have undergone digitization.

The DICT also reported that it pushed for the passage of the SIM Card Registration Act, monitored more than 1,000 cybersecurity threats, held sessions on the Data Privacy Act, and launched Cybersecurity Awareness programs.

DICT also listed in its year-end report its plans and targets for the next year.

These include plans for digital infrastructure, investment promotion, as well as improvements in bureaucratic efficiency.

To promote investments, the Digital Cities Program will set up Information Technology and Business Process Management (IT-BPM) locations in 31 cities by 2025 to generate rural jobs.
