PAGASA monitoring tropical depression

MANILA — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Sunday said it is monitoring a tropical cyclone outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

In a radio interview, weather specialist Veronica Torres said the tropical cyclone was located 2,960 kilometers east of Visayas with maximum sustained winds of 45 km per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/hour as it slowly moves westward.

“In the next two to three days, there is still a low possibility that it will enter PAR,” Torres said.

Tropical Depression Amang was the first cyclone that entered the country this year flooding many parts of the Bicol region.

PAGASA expects at least one tropical cyclone in April, one or two each in May and June, and two to three each in July, August and September.

Meanwhile, Torres said a heat index of 42 degrees Celsius was felt at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City on Saturday.

“We expect a heat index or humidity factor on Sunday in Quezon City or Science Garden from 32 to 37 degrees Celsius,” Torres said.

She added that “despite the high heat index, scattered rains are still expected in the country. The rains could last for five minutes, or 30 minutes, sometimes three hours.”

Yesterday, the highest heat index was recorded in Dagupan and Davao cities at 43 degrees Celsius.

PAGASA said that from March 1 to April 22, the top five heat index recorded were in Butuan City, 48 degrees Celsius; Legazpi City and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, 47 degrees Celsius; Dagupan City and Aparri, 46 degrees Celsius.

The weather bureau defines heat index as a measure of how hot it really feels outside, when humidity and other factors are considered along with the temperature. The weather bureau warned that heat stroke is probable with continued exposure to heat index ranging from 42 to 52 degrees Celsius.

It advised the public to limit the time spent outdoors, drink plenty of water, and avoid tea, coffee, soda and liquor. It also urged them to schedule heavy-duty activities to prevent heat-related illnesses.

PAGASA officially declared the beginning of the warm and dry season on March 21 as it announced the termination of the northeast monsoon, which signals the start of what is commonly referred to as the summer season in the country.

The dry season that brings warmer temperatures is expected to last until May.
