MANILA — President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has expressed his readiness to work closely with the Catholic Church and the Vatican, Papal Nuncio Archbishop Charles John Brown said on Monday.
Brown said in an interview yesterday over the Church-run Radio Veritas, Marcos made the commitment during his courtesy call on the president-elect – along with five other foreign diplomats – on June 10.
Their meeting, he said, was “positive” and “very productive.”
“We had a very productive, encouraging and positive discussion and the president-elect assured me of his desire to collaborate, cooperate closely with the church and Holy See,” Archbishop Brown said.
The social arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) earlier congratulated Marcos and vice president-elect Sara Duterte-Carpio for their electoral victory.
While Caritas Philippines congratulated the country’s new leaders through its chairman, Kidapawan Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, it also reminded Marcos and Duterte-Carpio of their campaign promises and that they would be held accountable if they failed to fulfill them.
“We will, as always, exercise principled cooperation with the government. As such, we will support all his administration’s programs that will respect the rights and dignity of the Filipino people; honor the rule of law and history; and make government more accountable to its people,” Caritas said.
“With our post-election accountability program, we will hold him and all elected officials liable of all their election promises,” it added.
