DepEd open to discussions regarding teachers’ wage hike

MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) expressed its willingness to engage in deliberations regarding the proposal to raise the salary of public school teachers to P50,000 per month.

Education Undersecretary and spokesperson Michael Wesley Poa stated that DepEd is committed to advocating for additional benefits for teachers.

ACT Teachers Rep. Francisca Castro, Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas, and Kabataan Party-list Rep. Raoul Danniel Manuel introduced House Bill 9920, aiming to elevate the salary of teachers from Salary Grade 11 to Salary Grade 15, “or whichever is higher.”

The proponents of the bill argued that the current salary of teachers is inadequate to cover the family living wage, which stands at P1,119 per day or P33,570 per month.

Poa mentioned that DepEd is unable to propose the optimal salary for public school teachers at the moment, as it awaits the findings of a World Bank study expected to be released in a couple of weeks.

“They are just requesting additional data from DepEd which we are now processing,” he said.

He stated that the data gathered from the World Bank study would be utilized during the deliberations in the House of Representatives.

“The department will diligently participate in the Congressional deliberations for the said bill,” Poa said.
