MANILA — The Department of Health on Friday reported that it has detected 14 cases of the BA.2.12.1 Omicron subvariant in Metro Manila and Palawan.
According to Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, the first BA.2.12.1 cases in the country were detected in the capital region, with 12 cases found in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. They had all been completely vaccinated against COVID-19.
The preliminary studies indicate that the BA.2.12.1 sub-lineage is most likely to exhibit immune evasion, the agency stated. There is no indication that BA.2.12.1 causes more severe disease.
The cases from Metro Manila received booster shots and experienced mild symptoms. After completing home isolation, they are classified as asymptomatic and recovered.
Thirty-nine of their close contacts are not showing signs of COVID-19.
Moreover, Vergeire reported that 11 foreign tourists and one local tested positive for the Omicron subvariant in Puerto Princesa City. All 28 of their close contacts tested negative.
More than 3.68 million COVID-19 cases were reported in the country, with 60,452 deaths since the start of the pandemic. From May 6 to 12, the DOH has recorded only 971 new cases.
Another Omicron subvariant, BA.2.12, was identified by the department. The case was a Finnish woman who visited Quezon City and Baguio City. She has since recovered and returned to Finland.
