DSWD allocates P6 million cash assistance to quake victims

MANILA – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will allot PHP6 million financial aid to the local government units and their residents who were hit by the magnitude 7 earthquake on Wednesday.

“The President has ordered me to give a firsthand report to him. Nakikita nya sa social media pero gusto nya yung tao nya mismo [ang mag-report] (He can see the damages of the earthquake as posted on social media but he wants to hear the report from his staff),” DSWD Secretary Erwin Tulfo told reporters on Wednesday.

Along with his staff and Assistant Secretary Romel Lopez, Tulfo visited Abra, the province severely impacted by the earthquake, to assess the situation. They also traveled to Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

“The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and Philippine National Police are on the ground doing their duty for the people. Ibig sabihin nandito ang gobyerno, nakaalalay (It only means, the government is here ready to assist). It is our aim to make the victims feel like should have nothing to worry about, the President has instructed us to be proactive not reactive,” Tulfo said

The DSWD report showed over 2,000 food packs are ready for distribution and additional 5,000 packs will be transported in Abra.

On the other hand, Lopez stated that the PHP6 million fund allocated to help the victims will be used through cash assistance.

“The department has already readied the PHP1 million for distribution, the other PHP5 million is being downloaded for augmentation today or tomorrow. Pang cash assistance siya para sa mga nasugatan nasiraan ng bahay etc., (It is for cash assistance to those who were injured and those whose homes were damaged due to the quake),” he said.

The DSWD, he said, will distribute PHP5,000 to PHP10,000 per family depending on the severity of the damage incurred.

Apart from the cash aid, the DSWD said it has allotted over PHP1 billion in standby funds and stockpiles of family food packs and other food and non-food items for the displaced families.
