Marcos approves onion importation

MANILA — The Philippines continues to import onions.

This is what Agriculture spokesperson Rex Estoperez said after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved the importation of 21,060 metric tons of onion.

Estoperez said that DA Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban has already signed the importation of fresh yellow and red onions.

About 3,960 metric tons of fresh yellow onion and 17,100 metric tons of fresh red onion will be imported.

According to Estoperez, importers must ensure that the imported onions arrive in the country by January 27.

He said the imported onions should not go past January 27 because it is necessary to ensure that local onion farmers will be given protection.

In the middle of February until the month of May, the peak of onion harvesting by farmers in the country is expected to hit.

Estoperez hopes that when the onion supply in the country is sufficient, the onion will return to P150 to P200 per kilo as recorded in September.
