MANILA — The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is warning the public against false crime reports that recently circulated on social media involving business establishments in Metro Manila.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the NCRPO said it investigated the alleged robberies in a Japanese restaurant, a popular coffee shop and a Chinese restaurant that trended on social media, but found the reports to be “false and misleading.”
The NCRPO said the reported incident in a Japanese restaurant occurred about four years ago. The establishment has since strengthened its security to protect its patrons.
The two other alleged crimes at a known coffee shop and a Chinese eatery were also found to be baseless and fake, police said.
NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo said they are working with the Anti-Cybercrime Group of the Philippine National Police to identify the people responsible for the false reports.
Okubo advised the public to be responsible in sharing information on social media.
“We understand the alarm that can be caused by false news and misinformation, particularly when shared on social media platforms,” he said.
“Metro Manila residents can rest assured that the NCRPO is continuously monitoring crime reports in real-time as well as through online platforms to proactively respond to these situations,” Okubo added.
The NCRPO said those requiring police assistance may call hotline numbers 09158888181 or 09999018181.
