Phivolcs: Fewer volcanic quakes recorded in Bulusan

MANILA – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday reported that even though Mount Bulusan continues to emit voluminous plumes, the number of volcanic earthquakes in the last 24 hours has been lower than the previous day.

Volcanic earthquakes are triggered by magma movements or eruptions, as compared to tectonic quakes which are caused by fault movements.

Seven volcanic quakes have been recorded in Mount Bulusan for the past 24 hours, lower than the 29 volcanic quakes the previous day.

Massive plume emissions measuring 150 meters in height have been recorded during both 24-hour monitoring period. Additionally, plume emission continues to drift northwest.

In an explosive volcanic eruption, volcanic plumes are columns of hot volcanic ash and gas emitted into the atmosphere. A weaker eruption is based on the height of the plume coming out of the crater.

Mount Bulusan has been under Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) since Sunday, when a 17-minute phreatic eruption and a kilometer-high, steam-rich gray plume were recorded.
