PNP to enforce one-strike policy against illegal gambling

MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday stated that it would strictly implement the one-strike policy against police commanders who fail to stop illegal gambling operations.

Police chiefs were warned by PNP Directorate for Operations chief Maj. Gen. Valeriano de Leon that if they are found either tolerating or in cahoots with illegal gambling operators, they would be relieved from their posts.

“We have to remind police commanders that there is a specific instruction from Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and PCSO (Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office) chairperson Royina Garma that Peryahan ng Bayan operations are no longer authorized,” Valeriano said in a statement.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año had directed the PNP and local government units to strictly implement the ban on Peryahan ng Bayan operations.

According to De Leon, he would suggest to PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. the relief of police chiefs if they fail to curb illegal gambling operations in their areas of jurisdiction.

“There is a directive from Malacañang to stop illegal gambling. If they fail to do it, then they will be relieved immediately. We will find other police commanders who will replace them,” De Leon said.

After the PNP received reports that Peryahan ng Bayan and other forms of illegal gambling are still operating in Calamba City and other parts of Laguna, he released the warning.

Calabarzon police director Brig. Gen. Antonio Yarra was directed to investigate illegal gambling operators in Laguna.
