MANILA – Political party leaders expressed their “unwavering support” for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s initiative for peace.
The Philippine government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) have agreed to hold peace talks anew.
“As the united voice of the House of Representatives, representing all political parties, we collectively express our unwavering support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s initiative for peace and national unity. This historic move marks a pivotal moment in our nation’s journey toward lasting peace and sustainable development,” political party leaders said in a joint statement on Tuesday.
“We acknowledge the diverse perspectives and ideologies within our ranks, yet we stand together in our commitment to the greater good of the Philippines. This unity in purpose reflects the strength of our democracy and the resilience of our nation,” they said.
Also, the leaders said that Marcos’ call for peace transcended political boundaries. The call for peace “speaks to the core of our shared values as Filipinos.” “It is a call for understanding, cooperation and collective action toward a future where every citizen can live in harmony and prosperity,” they said.
“Recognizing the complexities and challenges of this peace process, we pledge our support and commitment to contribute constructively to these negotiations. We are united in the belief that through dialogue, empathy and mutual respect, we can overcome historical divides and build a more inclusive and peaceful nation,” they added.
They urged Filipinos to join them in their pursuit. “It is only through our joint efforts that we can turn the aspirations of peace, unity and progress into reality.”
“Together, as a united House of Representatives and as one nation, we look forward to a future marked by peace, unity and prosperity for all Filipinos,” the leaders said.
House Secretary-General Reginald Velasco said that those who supported the President’s peace initiative were party leaders Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga 3rd District Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr., House Majority Leader and Zamboanga City 2nd District Rep. Manuel Jose “Mannix” Dalipe and Agusan del Norte 1st District Rep. Jose “Joboy” Aquino 2nd of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats; Rizal 1st District Rep. Michael John Duavit, Ilocos Sur 2nd District Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan and Quezon 1st District Rep. Wilfrido Mark Enverga of the Nationalist People’s Coalition; Deputy Speaker Las Piñas City Rep. Camille Villar, Surigao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Robert Ace Barbers and Romblon Rep. Eleandro Jesus “Budoy” Madrona of the Nacionalista Party; Camarines Sur 2nd District Rep. Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte Jr., Antipolo City 1st District Rep. Roberto Puno and Bataan 2nd District Rep. Albert Garcia of the National Unity Party; Ako Bicol Partylist Rep. Elizaldy Co, Bicol Saro Partylist Rep. Brian Raymund Yamsuan and Barangay Health and Wellness Partylist Rep. Angelica Natasha Co of the Partylist Coalition Foundation Inc.; and Navotas Rep. Tobias “Toby” Tiangco of the Partido Navoteño and a representative of other political parties in the House.
On Monday, Vice President Sara Duterte said the decision to hold peace talks anew with the NDFP was a deal with the devil.
“Mr. President, the government’s statement with the NDFP in Oslo was an agreement with the devil,” Duterte said in a statement on the 5th anniversary of the founding of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.
“Experience has taught us that they [communists] are not serious and have no sincerity in talking peace. They will use this peace negotiation to betray the government and deceive the public,” she said.
