DOH: Covid-19 cases up 50 percent

MANILA – The Department of Health (DoH) on Monday reported a 50 percent rise in new Covid-19 cases nationwide.

Data showed that 2,725 new cases were reported on December 12-18, 50 percent higher than the 1,821 new cases recorded from December 5-11.

The average number of new cases per day also increased from 260 on December 5-11 to 389 this week.

Based on the DoH’s Covid-19 tracker, as of December 15, Quezon City had the highest number of confirmed cases with 278,483, followed by Cavite with 245,221, Laguna with 183,170, Manila with 165,295, and Rizal with 161,149.

The department said 211 severe and critical patients were admitted to hospitals as of December 17.

Of the total 1,101 intensive care unit (ICU) beds for Covid patients, 142 or 12.9 percent are occupied.

More than 78 million people, or 100.44 percent of the target population, have been vaccinated against Covid-19, while 23 million have received their booster shots.

On the other hand, 7.1 million senior citizens, or 82.16 percent of the target A2 population, have already received their primary series.

“Everyone is reminded not to be complacent about the threat of Covid-19. We must continue to properly follow the minimum public health standards under Alert Level 1. We also remind the public to always wear the best-fitted face mask and, if possible, stay in well-ventilated areas,” the department said in a statement on Monday.
