PNP urges protesters to respect election results

PNP officer in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. made the appeal while directing police officers to observe maximum tolerance in dealing with protesters.

“We understand the sentiment of the supporters and respect the citizens’ right to self-expression. However we are appealing to concerned groups to refrain from engaging in activities that can instigate and disrupt peace and order in the community,” Danao said in a statement.

Vice President Leni Robredo’s supporters criticized the outcome of the elections favoring presumptive president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Some conducting protest rallies in front of the Commission on Elections (Comelec)’s headquarters in Intramuros, Manila.

Danao reminded the protesters to follow safe and health measures in the face of the pandemic.

He assured that the PNP is probing election-related violence that it documented.

During the Laging Handa briefing yesterday, PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo stated that security measures are in place in response to protest rallies being planned by some groups.

The deployment of police officers at the Philippine International Convention Center where the canvassing of votes is being conducted, is one of these measures.

Fajardo advised rally organizers to collaborate with the police so that the PNP could also provide the necessary security.
