House panel approves to revoke SMNI franchise, raises bill to plenary

MANILA –  A bill aimed at revoking the franchise of Sonshine Media Network International, which is owned by controversial televangelist Apollo Quiboloy, has progressed through the committee level and has been forwarded to the plenary for further deliberations.

House Bill 9710, introduced by 1-Rider Rep. Ramon Rodrigo Gutierrez, received unanimous approval from all members of the committee chaired by Paranaque Rep. Gustavo Tambunting. The bill was endorsed without revisions after a motion from Surigao del Norte Rep. Johnny Pimentel.

During the committee session, SMNI counsel Mark Tolentino stated their intention to present a position paper opposing the revocation of the network’s franchise. However, Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin informed them that the paper would be submitted to the plenary members for consideration.

Furthermore, the committee found Quiboloy in contempt for consistently failing to attend hearings regarding allegations of sexual abuse and human trafficking.

Quiboloy’s legal representative, Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, requested the committee to delay the implementation of the contempt order until Friday, stating his intention to persuade the televangelist to attend the hearings.
